I own a 73 with an 8.5:1compression ratio (I think). I want to pick up the speed off the line by simply changing the gears. Can this be done? A friend of mine had a 73 that really flew off of the line, the only difference was was that he had headers, so I put headers on mine. It didn't seem to make a difference (at least not that much) so I took them off.
I mostly drive on the streets and have very little highway driving.
I have P235/60R15 tires, if that makes a difference.
Without going expensive, what is the best way to increase off the line speed?
BTW, I have an auto, 350 with a 4 barrel quadrajet.
i am assuming yo mean you have a 8.5 compression ratio not gear ratio you need to find out what gear ratio you have first..3.08,3.55 ,3.70 etc...then decide ...a different gear change will help you accelerate faster from starts.
Multiply 1st gear X final (axle) to determine overall. Gears will definitely make a difference. Suggest get engine tuning right first, recurve dist., eliminate T.C.S., etc. Then cam it up to increase overall power. Then see if you want more gear.
If your 73 is a stock L48/Auto, you probably have 3:08 gears. Those are great for top end, but not very good for off the line. Try a looser torque convertor first, then if you still want to do gears, you can go with some 3:55's or 3:70's.
