Need Oil Pan Advice

Default Need Oil Pan Advice

While I have my '79 in the air working under the car, I thought I would change the rear crankshaft seal that is leaking. I have seen threads that say I will need to remove the bolts that attach the idler arm to the frame and allow the steering linkage to hang lower and the pan will come off. Do I need to attach a hoist and also lift the engine or will I be able to remove the pan once the Idler arm is lowered? Thanks for the advice!

Just the linkage. It will all swing out of the way without a hoist.

I am doing this right now. I dropped my idler arm, actually I removed the cotter pin and nut and took the drag/center linkage off the idler arm but removing the 2 frame bolts will do the same thing,
In my case I also removed the control valve from the pitman arm, something that is not easy for most and the linkage drops right down out of the way. No problems dropping the pan after that.
I would try the idler arm first and if you still need room the pitman or control valve needs dropping. I hope not.

If you have 2-1-2 exhaust you have to cut it off too.

If you have true duals not a problemo.

I've dropped my stock big block pan with just the idler arm removed from the frame no problem.

Thanks for the info. I will have a go at it tomorrow. It is the concensus that there is no need of a hoist to gain needed clearance. I appreciate everyone's help with this.

From your post, I was not certain of the style of pan gasket you intend to use. I'd highly recommend the one-piece Fel-Pro 'blue' plastic gasket. Not only does it eliminate the pains of the 4-piece gasket installation , it is reusable in event you have to drop the pan in the future.

Best of luck in your project!

NOTE: I installed the one-piece Fel-Pro back around 1998 when I installed a pan from Corvette Central. The pan isn't a perfect replacement for the orig pan but the gasket does NOT leak!
