Default How is the shift indicator needle held on?

I'm putting my console back together today and when I slip the shift indicator needle over the tab on the shifter and try to then move the shifter, the needle keeps falling off. What's supposed to hold the needle/pointer in the lens and stay attached to the shifter? Is it a slip fit into both or is there something to hold the needle on the shifter itself?

If I remember correctly when I removed mine, the needle was held in place by the lens on one side and the shofter on the other. i will have to get those parts out to see if there is anything else but I don't believe so.

yeah i think thats right the "shifter arm" has a forked tab that slipped over something and then it was held in place by the lenses ...

Mine's missing completely. Just today I was in there (unplugging the @#$%^&* seat belt light) and it's just gone. No biggy, I'm used to it, but curious.....

The lever has a pin on the side that moves the needle - that pin also pretty much keeps it pinned to the slide rail. With the lens installed, it's not going anywhere.

My 77's was off the pin and slid under the edge of the bezel - you couldn't see it to save your life. I didn't find it until after I ordered a repop that didn't fit right.

Ha ha! Thanks, Bat. Some day when I get in there again I'll look for it. Meanwhile, it's not important enough to warrant the hassle. Gear indicator? I don't need no stinking gear indicator! Real men know what gear they're in!
Good luck Steve....

I finally figured it out and thought I would post the "trick". There is a groove in the indicator needle that slips onto a ridge in the clear part of the shifter lens. There is a plate and then the light body that then fit over the lens on the console which holds the shift indicator on the lens groove/ridge. The when you drop down the console to re-mount it, there is a small amount of play to then slip the indicator needle over the pin on the shifter. Everything stays in place and life is good.

I was tripped up the first time because I didn't put the indicator needle into the ridge/groove which holds it in place. Maybe I'm a little slow but it was pretty easy to miss. Probably explains why so many others have found their needle laying under the console. Bubba probably took it apart and missed putting the needle back in the ridge/groove. The needle won't stay in place more than 5 seconds that way.
