I once had an oil burning situation that required the heads to be removed. I told the engine builders helper guy that there was a striped thread on one of the heads where the alternator mount goes and that I wanted him to repair it with a heli-coil. He was lazy and didn't and I found this out when recently pulling the engine out because I couldn't thread a bolt into the passanger rear of the head to attach a chain to. He just swapped the heads from side to side (lazy bugger). So my answer is yes, the heads can be used on either side.
