Default Changed ignition system - miss at idle

Well I got the Might Demon dialed in (theose transfer slots are critical) and the engine was running good using the stock HEI dist. I decided to go ahead and add new 8.5mm wires, the Mallory HyFire ignition (new) and a Mallory distributor (used - non vacuum advance-- mechanical advance set to 24 degrees) to complete the package. Car fired right back up but was really missing below 1000. Above 1500 it pulled really hard and all the timing came in (39 degrees at 2800) as expected. Intial timing was still set to 18 degrees (same as HEI) .

Anyone have any idea what may be causing the low speed miss?. It didn't do this with the HEI.

vacuum leak? did you knock anything loose in the install, such as brake booster or carb vacuum lines?

No - nothing loose. What I did notice is that starting is now very labored when hot (even though I'm still set at 18 initial like I was with the HEI). Wasn't labored with the HEI at 18. Something is not quite right. I don't think I'm off a tooth...but if I was, would that cause the problem? I mean even though I'm reading 18 degrees advance it's really more? Sort of confused now and need the input of fresh forum eyes.

even if it is of half a tooth from the gear swap in the other thread, that should only change the position the distributor is in when it is set at the same advance.

Just a WAG, but did you put together the plug wires or were they pre assembled?

If not the wires you should try called Mallory's tech department. They may have some insight.

Good luck,
Jeff

Thinking it has something to do with the curent cam and the lack of a vaccum advance. Reinstalling the HEI to make sure the problem goes away. The Mallory is a lot tighter and better built distributor than the factory HEI...wish it would work.
