The power steering on my 81 was leaking like crazy so I got all 4 new hoses and a valve repair kit. I put all the stuff back together and I bleed the power steering by turning the wheels back and forth untill the fluid was clear with no bubbles, but now when I turn it with the engine on it trys to turn itself to the right and it kind of pops when changing directions. There are no leaks anywhere and I haven't moved the car yet, all my testing was done in park, but I don't see why it's doing this, where did I screw up?
Use the Chilton manuel and follow the directions to a tee. Take your time and you will see that as you turn the adjustment nut responce is not immediate!!! Be patient and find that "sweet-spot" that centers the wheels. You also need an alignment when you are done. Also be careful as to the position of the two hoses that exit your power steering pump. Make sure that they are turned away from your lower a-arm as the low presure hose, the one closest to it, will bind and eventualy slice it. Good luck!
It is true that you don't have to realign your front end after changing your control valve. However, your steering wheel and steering gear may need to be centered if you do not screw the new control valve onto the relay rod the same number of turns as the original valve.
