Default Help?? Replacing fuel pump and push rods 73'454

Replacing the fuel pump on my 73'454 today. Getting it off was alitte work. Have to remove the front tire and jack it up. After using a foot and a half worth of extentions to get at the bolts and some tight working conditions it was removed. The problem is getting the push rod out. The only way I can see getting it out is to pull the engine. Not an option I want to do. Any help would be great to make this easier. Thanks. ps. when adding the new push rod I understand the pushrod needs to be located underneath the arm on the fuel pump. Without being able to see in this location does anyone have any tricks to get this to happen. Thanks again for any info

Why pull the engine? Take out the pipe plug below the pump. That is where the push-rod will come out. I don't believe anything is blocking it.

the push rod should be on top of the arm.

coat the rod with grease before you put it bck in, it will hold long enough to get the pump back in without a fight

I just finished replacing the fuel pump on my 71 and it was a knuckel buster.. But the help from this forum was immensely helpful.. Just a note if yoy replace the rubber hose use Fuel injection hose it is stiffer and stronger and will not collase and kink... .. The 350 motor has a bolt that is on the front of the engine around from the fuel pump you can replace it with one about an 1" 1/4 and will go thru the block and hold the push rod in place , the grease works too...

Hey guys,

I know I'm coming to this thread 13 and a half years later, but I just recently purchased my 71 454 and it need to get its fuel pump replaced after I found there's no fuel getting to the carburetors.

I took a look at the fuel pump and it's really tight to get to from the top, I wanted to see how you all approached the fuel pump.
I was thinking about jacking it up, then approaching it from the bottom.

Thanks,
FM
