Default Header mufflers yes/no

Right now I don't feel like running a complete exhaust out the back (sidepipes may be in the future). I don't care about the noise or fumes.

Is there a performance drawback (nicely built 454) to using header mufflers? Thinking of the Purple Hornies. Other suggestions?

The local shop wants $500.00 to do the job with me bringing the mufflers and x pipe. This was about double what I thought it would cost for a 2.5 regular pipe system. Purple Hornies are very attractive right now..........

Tht's too high, IMO. Find a shop that's a little hungry......$250 sounds about right.

Hvymtlc5 I am in the exact position as you. I actually ordered the Purple Hornies with the turndown from Jegs last night and they should arrive Monday.
I am not sore of the drawbacks on a Vett but in other cars the only drawback I experienced is that if you don't run the exhaust out sideways from the header mufflers the harmonic noise wil kill you if the fumes don't first.

I had Purple Hornies on my 70 Z28 many years ago. They sound great but are VERY loud. Expect to get attention from your local police. I ran them for a year or two but found the noise too much to stay with them. It was hard to hold a conversation in the car & my ears actually popped after a 2 hour drive. They did breathe very well though.

i just got a price today here in NJ for between $350 to $400
for 2 1/2 aluminized TRUE dual exhaust with an X pipe going in to my existing flowmasters.
so $500 does sound a ittle high

I think I may do a "bubba" here and put on the Purple hornies with the "non-functioning" chrome Hooker style side pipes... I don't think anyone would be able to tell where the sound is coming from.
