Default 1969 carpet installation

Hi- need some help. I'm installing carpet and new underlayment. How do the seat belts get through the carpet? Do the seat belts get installed under the carpet? Under the underlayment directly to the floor?

thanks, trying to do this work today

I know on the outside (closest to the door) on both the passenger side and drivers side the seat belt comes through a plastic gromet that is inserted into the carpet. This gromet is impossible to find! I tried finding a couple of them when I put my carpet back in and had no luck. I have a pretty good pic of the seat belts installed in a 69 that is supposed to be correct. Let me know what your e-mail is and I will send it your way.

I'd like to get a copy of that pic, if you'd be so kind.

The outermost belts mount directly under each seat. The belt then passes posteriorly and outwardly toward the outer rear corner of the seat.

The belt passes under a large metal bracket/retainer which is bolted though the floorboards with 3-4 bolts. That's what holds the seatbelt "down".

The belt then comes THROUGH a slit that you must cut in the carpet, just inward of the door sill. It goes through the large plastic grommet previously mentioned. This grommet is 8-10 inches long, and 2-3 inches wide. The grommet is placed in the slit that you cut.

The inner belts mount over the carpet to the trans tunnel.

There should be no extra underlayment...just the carpet with its' jute backing. Chuck
