Default Door spring replacement

I need to replace that S-shaped door spring. Is that special tool they advertise in the catalog really necessary?

I did mine with a regular small pry bar. Great directions on forum if you do a search.

I found it helpful, but a small pry bar seems like it would also do the job. A straight screwdriver- maybe not.

Hey Randy
I have the tool and I live in Escondido. You can borrow it if you want.
Send me an e-mail. Go to corvettesofsandiego.com and click on the box at the bottom of the front page.

Whatever you use, it has to have the bend in it. A regular screwdriver isn't beefy enough and is straight so it won't work. A brake adjuster might work. The springs have a good deal of tension, so it has to be strong enough to work against the tension without bending.

Aren't they only 5 bucks? I think it would be worth the aggrevation to get it and be done with the job. It only takes 4 minutes to install - 1 to install it and 3 to drink a beer afterwards.

Make sure you put a towel or old tee shirt in the space between the door and fender. That way, when the spring falls it doesn't scratch the paint.

I use my distributor wrench, with a bend in it. Works great...!!!
