Default 77 non-tilt column question

I neet to replace the ignition lock cylinder, but there is a c retaining clip that I am having trouble removing. The star wheel does not want to compress enough for me to get it out. Is there a trick to doing this?
Thanks, Rob

There is a special tool, though I believe I didn't use one when I pulled by 70 Vette T&T steering wheel apart. From what I remember, if you remove the spring, under the embedded cap with the flathead screwdriver slot in it (push in and turn), the pressure is removed and the "C" clip comes out easier.

I posted a note to myself about the rebuild article (butr the website doesn't come up...) http://www.corvettefaq.com/ - look at the steering & suspension sections.

If you want PM me with your e-mail address - I have some diagrams which could help too...

Got your PM and sent them. I'll look around for other diagrams and papers I printed out for my T&T rebuild... I'll send them your way if I find them.

Found this off of the other link
http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/?page_id=4

about 1/2 way down the web page are papers directly related to the non-T&T steering column disassembly/assembly (T&T is further). These are the documents I used for rebuilding mine...

The above link takes you to Terry Rudy's new corvettefaq sight. Terry and I are in process of transfering and updating papers.

Your standard (non-adjustable) steering column has a round wire retaining ring that holds the toothed locking plate in place. The ring is rather difficult to remove. Your column does not have a clip like the T&T column.

There is a bridge type tool that can be used to depress the locking plate so that you can take two very small screwdrivers or picks to "dig" the ring out of its retaining groove in the steering shaft. The tool can be purchased or borrowed from most automotive stores.

I have a son with strong thumbs. Before I purchased the bridge tool I had him depress the locking plate while I worked over and around him to dig the ring out.

You need to be careful so that you don't deform the ring when removing it. Otherwise, purchase a new one from any GM dealer. The retaining ring is GM part number 5694191.

Good luck,
Jim
