Default Speedo cable for a 76, is this right?

I just pulled the inter speedmeter cable from it's housing to lube it before I reinstall my dash. The transmision end of the cable has no fitting on it. It is just the braided cable. It is square for about the last inch or so. Is this the way it is suposed to be or is it broke? It doesn't look broke but it doesn't look complete either.

Thanks for your input.

I lubed the cable and feed it back in. It seemed to engage when it got to the end. Has anyone else done this? I would hate to get things all back together and find out the cable is broke and have to take it all apart again. Thanks
