Default Considering an Electric Fan

There is no fan-clutch on my -69.
So instead of buying a new clutch, I am considering an electric fan.
Will a 16" fan be the right size?

I am wondering about this one from Perma-Cool:
JEG's: # 771-19115

The prize is right ( $ 105), and it seems to move a lot of air: 2,950cfm with lightweight aluminum blades. (16")

Some opinions to this?
Suggestions?

(Scandinavia never get that hot.
We have two winters: One white, and one green! )

Most of us in the U.S. use dual 11 or 12 inch fans, but we have higher temps than you. I would think the one you have found would do a good job. One guy on the forum was going to try a Volvo electric fan which is supposed to move a lot of air. You might be able to get those cheap where you are; used.

If you have a small block it should do the job. I went with Spal SP231 — 16" HP Pull Type 2360 CFM. Its more expensive but it works. Temperature never goes above 180 even in the 90s.

I agree with Berniesvette, we use a dual 11" setup that's rated at 2750cfm that works well here, especially on the hard to cool big block cars.

In my 1970 Big block, im using twin fans with shroud from a 1990's LT1 Vette ; they move a tremendous amount of air . Am presently cranking out 560 h.p./600 tq. (gross) with no problem whatsover keeping the motor cooled to 180 f. Hope that helps.

I can see your points with dual fans.
But my wishlist now, is quite long, so I was hoping to get away with it
with a single big fan, for half the price.
Since I have a smallblock 350, I think I will give the single 16" a chance.
I also want to try it with a thermal switch on 180°.

Go to Dewitts.com They have everything and they've only make stuff for vettes! I went with the single 16" spal fan for my '69 350/350 and it works great!!

Thoughts on running a single or dual fan with stock Rad? Just Rip out the existing shroud and fan/clutch and add in the electric unit?

I'm running a 2500 cfm single Flexalite fan that has the appearance of the one in olouieo's picture, and have no cooling problems. I've got a SB 406 and have the fan set to turn on at 195 and off at 180. Also, I have an aftermarket radiator that is new and larger than the stock. I think yours should work fine as long as the radiator is clean and in good shape.

My opinion is that if you don't have cooling problems, don't switch. I have dual Spals and they are LOUD!!

I run the 16" Permicool and have no problems keeping the temps down under 180-190 on hot days.I got to add that when I went to the 406 I had no choice to upgrade the radiator to the Griffen 31X19 you see here. The stock radiator would not keep up with the 500 hp for much more than a half hour. Now I can cruise all day,and no worries about the temps.

That is the one that I have been looking at.
How is the fan, when it comes to noise??
Is that a temp feeler, in the radiator?

I run a 15 1/2" fan off of a Ford Windstar and it keeps my 10.5:1 383 cool with it mounted to a Griffin rad. I also have the smaller 13 1/2" fan from the same van that I'm going to switch for use as a puller. I got it all for $100 CA unfortunately there is some fab work for the mounts as the shorud will not fit in the vette.

I am running a single fan on a stock LT1 radiater with no problems. It kept the 350 cool hoping it will keep the 383 cool.

Try one of these on your Dual Spal setup and they won't run full blast unnecessarily. I really like this unit; it varies fan speed with engine temp.

Running that Perma-Cool fan on my '76. No problems. Noise is not a problem. Temp. sensor, on mine, is mounted in the thermostat housing. Using a Painless wiring set up.
