Just received my new mini starter to replace the original starter on my '73. The original starter/solenoid had one large bolt in the middle (I assume for the battery cable) and two small bolts, one on each side (one labled 'r' and one labled 's' - not sure if that helps.)
My new mini starter has TWO large bolts, one with a wire going to the starter and only ONE small bolt. What goes where?
The S means start, the R means run. If your car has points, the R terminal goes directly to the coil through a resistance wire that knocks down battery voltage to around 9v keeping the points from frying. The S terminal supplys the full 12 volts to the points in the start position only so the points recieve the full battery voltage during cranking, and 12V to actuate the starter. If you have HEI you don't need the R connection. Most GM starters I've seen had 3 connections, my mini has two lugs and one spade connector. The spade connector is my R connection. Refer to your installation instructions for connector designations.
Thanks...both post have been very helpful. Given that the ignition has been converted, my understanding is that I will delete the 'R' wire and connect the 'S' wire to the small nut on the solenoid. As as the battery contact, will it go to the connection that already has a wire going to the stater of the other one?
Unfortunately, the new starter did not come with any documentation and I am certainly new at this.
There is a red 12ga wire that connects together with the main battery cable, this is the charging wire that keeps the battery charged, connect these two on the battery lug. The purple wire is the start wire, and you can fold back and tape the yellow wire out of the way.
