maybe a lifter

got my new vacuum can on and tuned for performance.took it for a spin and going thru the gears missed 3rd. revved to about 6000 rpm i guess. developed a tickin sound and got it home. popped the hood and checked header bolts... all tight...took off valve covers and checked rocker arms.... nope, not that.... could i have blown a lifter? how do i check those. 71BB/ m21/ 3.70 gears

A header gasket leak sounds exactly like a lifter and you don't need any loose bolts to have one.
I'm guessing a header leak

Take a close look at the valve springs...

A lifter may have hung up. If all the springs look ok, try regular driving for a few miles. Noise, if a lifter, usually goes away.
