Default HEADERS or NOT!!!

How much better are a set of headers over the old ram horn manifolds? I have a set of headers for my car and I think that I might put them back on. But I don't want to deal with the excessive heat. My car is already hot enough as it is. Thought about using the exhaust wrap, but don't want the rag look either. If I put them on will I gain that much for the hassle? I have a 76 L82 4spd, stock bottom end, mild cam, alum intake, mild head work, and a 600cfm carb. Any experiences or suggestions???

Thanks Paul

Send your headers off to JetHot and get them ceramic coated. It will cut down on the under hood heat considerably. It will also make the headers more thermally effective by keeping the heat into the exhaust gas.

My cars feels like I have NOS since I installed the headers. I wish that I had done it ten years ago. I always thought the stock RAM manifolds were okay but I was wrong. Headers scavenge exhaust from your cylinders and increase the amount of 02 that your cylinders have available to burn.

Go for the headers. Best thing I ever put on my car. Going from the stock manifolds with the fake dual exhaust to Headers with true 2½" duals made a night and day difference.

As far as more heat build up in the cabin... :bs
I've noticed NO DIFFERENCE. If anything when I shut the car down I can wait 15 minutes and start working around the engine without getting burned. Those iron manifolds retain heat forever.

These guys are right! Headers are probably the single most bang-for-your-buck mod you can do. They are also right about the header mfrs coatings - they suk! Believe me, I know from personal experience and also heard from others! No matter what brand you buy, buy them direct from Jet-Hot and the look will last!

What about problems with the starter getting to hot? I had a buddy with a 73 that the headers were about 1/2 in from the starter and idler arm. I have true 2 1/4 in dual exhaust now. I put the headers on first when I built the car. I could not believe the heat coming off of them. So I went with ram horns and pipe. Maybe I'll try that cheesy wrap. I live in the desert 95-100 day and 40-45 at night now. So heat is BAD!!

I checked into this because I was so Pi$$ed about Hooker's crappy coating. The jethot coating is both in and outside which causes less resistance and less heat buildup. If your headers are in decent shape, you can contact them and they will have them picked up at your door, sandblast, clean, and apply coating to them, and ship them back for ~$200. People who have them done rave about them being much cooler than non-coated ones. I know I sound like I work for them but contact them and they will send you a sales brochure and video so you will see what I mean. If you've ever seen NASCAR or NHRA Pro cars, they all use and sware by this coating! I'm torn between keeping my supercomps or switching to sidepipes or I would have already had mine done! Good luck!
