I know someone has done this swap. It looks like a simple swap, but not sure if I can use my old steering wheel and horn button? Will the electrical plug for the directionals plug back in? Any help would be great. Its going in a 72 4spd vette. Ive got c5 seats in it and now the steering wheel is too low, plus beer belly doesnt help.
I put a '78? up vette TT column in my '72 here, swapped many components....from my old fixed assy....but the wheel itself was not one of them, of course....I went with a stock replacement black leather late shark wheel....
I also some years later actually moved the wheel back about an inch by remounting it on the fire wall, flange spacer...and changing the tabs/zinc mounts under the dash assy....
this lousey inch helped a lot, and the TT itself got me by for quiet some time....my seat is also lowered, the firewall has been pushed forward below the column mount, by about 3 inches, and the pedals cut and lowered/moved forward...more leg room....so yes, i'ts easily done, and there are no electrical issues involved...I like having the dimmer switch on the steering wheel having cut that hump and section out of the floor years ago, well before the floor extension mentioned above...
I've been told to stick with 69 to 75 tilt/tele columns to make swap easier. I dont have pictures, and the seats were all ready in the car when I bought it. I do have the original seats also. I,ve driven 69 to 72 vettes with stock seats and fixed columns before and never had a problem. I know its the higher seats that are causing the problem, but they are much more comfortable, and I would like to keep them in it.
As any common sense would dictate, comfort is an individual thing....and so yes, the 69-75? TT would fit lots easier, but you gotta get off a fortune for one....
I got the essential guts of my column for TEN bux....and went from there....best deal in town on MY vette anyway...by FAR...
The T&T steering columns from 1969 through 1976 are exactly the same. The 1969 through 1975 steering wheels, horn parts, and telescoping lock parts are exactly the same. The 1976 Corvette had a specific steering wheel, most horn parts, and telescoping lock. Just the bare 1976 T&T column was the same.
So the any 1969-76 column will swap right in. Steering wheels on the standard (non-adjustable) column were the same as the T&T. But again, the horn parts and the telescoping lock parts are specific for T&T. You also need the turn signal lever and the tilt lever. They are T&T only parts.
If you can purchase the T&T column with the steering wheel, all the column levers, horn parts, telecscope lock, etc you are in!! (Although I am sure that your actual steering wheel will interchange.)
The turn signal switch wires should hook up to your existing vehicle wiring harness. If the new column "harmonica" connector doesn't want to snap into your harness, just swap the connector with the one that was on your original column. Be sure to keep the wires in the same order.
The ignition switch wires in your car will need to be twisted 180 degrees. They will snap right into the T&T switch. (the T&T ignition switch operates in the opposite direction from the standard column switch - so your wires have to be reversed.)
