Since my transmission no longer successfully shifts to anything other than neutral, and it's a three speed I'm planning on spending my tax return on having a local shop replace it with a rebuit 200R4/4R.
The first question is since a google search returns a nearly identical number of results, is it 200R4 or 2004R?
The transmission I've heard described is a pocketbook friendly bolt-on automatic with overdrive so if there is a difference in transmission for each name, that's the one I'm interested in.
Second, anyone in Austin know a good shop that would do this kind of service for me? and where do I look to get a new/used one of those transmissions?
Don't know of a good shop in Austin but I had mine done last year and I am thrilled. Bought a core for $50 and the shop here in Kerrville had me out the door for less than $1,600.
I did buy the Bowtie crossmember but your will work just fine since it is a 76. Hope this gives you idea what it should run. mine is a 200r4
I dunno how GM hydromatic div can get so screwed up....
as if they can't make up their mind what in hell they are building...and judging from the junk they have put out over the decades, I think they should be shut down....
be as it may....when the 200 series THM cam out...there was this thing known as a 200 METRIC...for the Metric stamped clearly on pan bottom....it was a real POS that is totally worthless....blow up special, not for fixing...
then came the 200 4r....note the space in there....why done that way,?? who knows...
somewhre in there out comes the 700r4 with the reverse trainling nomenclature....well that 'revised?" 200 is a smaller, lighter, more durable tranny than it's obese 700 cousin...
so it's a FAR superior swap...you need make sure you get a universal or chebby bellhousing pattern....
the old BPOC pattern willl not work without an adaptor plate, another 100 bux expense for nothing...
Thanks for the clarification... I notice the bowtie 2004R seems to be very reasonably priced and I've heard people recommend them before, what's the shipping cost on those? Also I'm assuming you'd get that with a universal or Chevy bellhousing as mr. vette mentioned?

Awesome! I'm waiting on my tax return to get the money for the transmission swap and I have a few things to fix on it until then (holes in the floor pans and seat belt coves and such), but when I have the money for the tranny swap I'll definately be in touch!
