Default when to replace shocks

Well I just started reading another post about replacing shocks and it got me to thinking.
I have a 79 vette with low mileage (40k) but should I be thinking about replacing my shocks due to age? I really dont want to unless they are bad, but what is the best way to test?
I have heard of pushing down on the car to see if it bounces - is that a good test for a vettes shocks? Thanks,
Hef

Vette shocks are like any other shocks, so the bounce test is valid. If it has the original shocks I would replace them. They're not that expensive unless you want speciality shocks.

$25 for KYB GR-1s and $30 for KYB Gas-a-just from Summit.

Those shocks are 27 years old, you really think time is kind to shocks? I'd replace them just for piece of mind. Am I ever glad that I did, too!

KYB GasAjust shocks.....

A corvette should handle and with 27 year old shocks,... its not able to do that. The gasajust stiffen the ride a bit and make the car handle better. There a major upgrade even over new OEM shocks.

For the $30 a piece you can't beat it...

If it feels like the car is floating down the road like a buick, it's time!

Why not replace them with some Bilstein Sport Shocks? I can't wait for mine from www.VBandP.com (they are a supporting vendor and offer forum discounts)..................gee I bet they are going to make such a difference - as the shocks on my vette at the moment are leaking oil :o thats if they have any left to leak!
