Razorblades are the best!!
I stripped my vette w/ razorblades. Works like a champ, I got the idea from a post here. This site just always has the best ideas, I would have never thought of that myself and would probably have broken out the big orbital sander.

Re: Razorblades are the best!! (ram82fire)
- 3 razorblades (had square ones, really sharp. Actually for removing glue and stuff from a freshly glued windwhield)
- enough beer :D
- still have all 10 fingers :D They hurt like hell though, didn't use a grip for the blades because the angle would have been too steap (it'd cut into the underlying layers), just held the tiny blade w/ 2 fingers.
The paint didn't come off that easy. Only one side was relativle quick because the sun had heated the paint and it didn't break. Took the both of use 1&1/2 day.
Hey ramfire, did you see my latest toy?? (maybe G told you)
That combined w/ the ZF-6 speed and I'll have roughly the same as you :D

Re: Razorblades are the best!! (Twinnie)
This is the first I've heard of this technique. Give us more details! How long did it take, what was the technique, etc. Did you literally take like a single blade razor blade (the ones that are about 11/2" wide) and peel the paint off? Or were they larger (if so, where'd you get 'em?). I've really been dreading the thought of using a chemical stripper, and I don't like the idea of using a sander because I understand you can make a real mess of your car with one if you're not real careful. So this really sounds like the ticket. If the warmer side of the care was easier, I wonder if a judicious use of a hair dryer set on high would make the process easier overall?

Yes, please do tell! I'm really considering stripping my car myself at some point. Heck, I may even paint it, but I've never painted anything like a car before, so I may pay someone. At any rate, I'd save a lot of money stripping it and I didn't like the idea of spending half my life with a chemical stripper and a plastic putty knife.

Re: Razorblades are the best!!
Ugh, don't talk to me about razorblades. The previous owner of my ride did a terrible job trying to tint the windows and I blew several weekends jammed in the cargo compartment painstakingly scraping the crap out between the defrost lines. :mad
I have no idea whether all of the lines still work.

I too stripped my car, a '73 with 9 layers of primer and paint, with a razor blade. For the most part it was fast and easy. The paint came off in sheets. I stripped 85% of the car in about 5 hours. I highly recommend, however, that you purchase a razor blade holder, available in any hardware store. Also be aware that no matter how careful you are, you will from time to time get the angle wrong and bite into the body. These are easily repaired, however. The only places you'll have problems is those areas where there is body work, i.e. bondo.

I shaved mine in 1994.
Easiest method I ever used.
The thicker the paint and the more coats, the faster it goes.
You will get a few gouges and nicks but they are easily repared.
This isn't a real good scan but you get the idea...

How about the bumpers--I noticed you pulled them off. Are they too soft to razor blade? Did you use a chemical stripper on them?

Neil ... if you haven't yet, would you make a detail drawing of your body craddle? And maybe put together a materials list. It looks like a great design and I know a lot of forum members would like to build one like it when they do their body off. Maybe we could get it posted in the technical section.
Thanks, Dick

Re: Razorblades are the best!! (Twinnie)
Very interesting, I have tried using a razor blade. And not only once.....
Didn´t work at all. The paint was sooooooo weak, I was unable to cut it away without damaging the fiberglass body.
So I bought an orbital sander, an vibration sander (is this the right name for this tool??) and did it the cenventional way.
Turned out great, but it took me roughly one month!!
And after all I used a sandblaster to clean up all the places I had no access to.
Some minor spots are still left, I´ll do them during the bodyrepair.
I always asked myself HOW YOU HANDLE THE BLADE
Are you cutting into the paint or are you scratching??
Whats the angle of the blade??
However it didn´t work for me at all, maybe because my vette was repainted before by the previous owner.
Wanderer: Yesterday I placed my vette on a trolley I constructed with the help of autocad. It´s adjustable, not havy weight but does only support the four maincontact points of the body. The two ones below the windshield frame and the two ones which are covered with rectangular metal covers.
I´ll post a pic here....
The vertical support beams are connected with L-Profiles, which are not mounted yet.... That's the reason why I supported the body with the help of other stands..... Yesterday it was too late to finish the trolley....
Perfect pics will be posted in the near future.
Anyway, I´ll post a new topic about this metal trolley for a vette and will try to give access to the technical drawings which are dwg-files (AutoCAD)

Re: Razorblades are the best!! (Nomad78SA)
I'm doing mine with razorblades also. The holder came from NAPA. My paint is old, thick, and in very bad condition :( . Fortunately, most of it comes right off :D .
It's easy to dig-in, especially on curved survaces, and sanding works better there. I had to replace both of my bumper skins, so I don't know the best way to strip them; probably sanding.

If you mean my bumpers, I took them off because they're thrashed. I ripped the underside of the front one on a speed bump  and some ricer drove into the back. I have new ones lying around and they come w/ no paint so no stripping needed.
I used these blades:
