Default Those with AFR 195 heads, question.

When I received my heads the combustion chambers all had this nick on the chamber edge near the exhaust valve. Probably .25 inches wide but exactly in the same place at all the chambers. I thought this was wrong so I called them and they said due to the steep machining in that area the cutter nicks the edge when coming out. They said its that way on ALL the 195s.

Does anyone else remember seeing this on their heads????

I had that on mine. It wasnt exactly the same on all of the chambers, I think it was more pronounced on the outer ones (1,2 and 7,8).

As long as there isnt any metal that protrudes into the chamber (highspots) it shouldnt be a problem IMHO.

I have 10.5 to 1 CR with flat tops with no problems so far.

Cutter marks such as you see usually show up in combustion chambers that are not fully cnc finished . AFR probably uses a serdi or similar type machine to do the seat install . There are always some irregularities in as cast combustion chambers, and the cutter head will cut into them . It is not uncommon to see this , and causes no problems .

AFR195's

Here of some pictures of mine out of the box. The middle pic on the left seems to show a small nick near the exhaust valve.

But they did look great.....

Good shots Vintage, but the pic you talk about would have the nick in the portion of the pic blocked out at the bottom. The bottom right pic would show it better but I cant see any nicks in that one.

Thanks Rendler, thats one vote yes.

Great detailed photos! I have pocket ported a few double hump iron heads and noted the ridges in your AL heads; they are there for a reason. Do you remember how the chamber ridges felt compared to the intake runner? I am thinking the chambers were smoother, but can't tell. AFR does nice work and I'd like to learn a lesson from the pros. It seems a smooth, polished chamber would reduce carbon build, but new wisdom may prevail. OR, do they treat aluminum heads differently from iron? Any input on this would be appreciated.

On my 195's the chamber was a little more polished than the runners. It looked like raw machine tool cuts on the runners where the chambers looked like they were buffed out.

I called Jason at AFR about those little nicks, he said that it was normal. That's where the casting is filled or something like that.

When I recieved my AFR heads a few years back I called and questioned those marks also.... seems to be normal on all of their heads and doesn't affect performance...

Are you all using the 195s on 350s or 383 and up?

Mine are actually in the box right now, being saved for a 383 since I will need the 67cc. They were on my 68 camaro, providing about a 9.6 compression with an XR282 hydraulic roller but the dynamic compression was too low, and did not perform like I wanted. So after doing some DCR calculations, I decided to pull out the Edelbrock RPM 64cc heads and shave them down to 59, providing a dynamic compression ratio of 8.24 (5cc pistons, 4.03 bore, .039 thick 4.166 dia, .018 deck, 5.7rods, 3.48 stroke) and that definitely ran stronger.

My experience is with a 350/355 engine, you just gotta have 64cc heads or less to get exciting power.......

See this is my concern with my motor. It would be nice if AFR would machine a set of heads with 64cc Chambered heads. It wouldn't take much. I'm building the same setup with the XR282HR with 195's and flat tops. The Static is right at 9.67 and I forget the DCR right now. Could you email me further information about what you have decided to do with your setup? Thanks. Dave..

383 , and I'm wondering why they dont have 64cc also since I had already bought pistons before deciding on the heads. I wanted 10.3 but now will be around 9.5 unless I shave em.

Agreed...the AFR180's should be offered in a 64cc or even a 58cc for the 350 crowd.

with 5cc pistions, and a stock .025 deck, that would come out to be about 10.3 and a zero deck would be 11 which would put all the rebuild engines in that sweet spot around 10.5 or so....
