I was thinking of just changing the Cam, no head work, on my L-48 1975; Can I do this without removing the engine? The manual shows the engine in the car with the cam change.
Also would this even help without a head change; I have the mid america true duals in my den ready to go in and Polished Turbo mufflers. I will also be re-curving the dist per Lars and replacing all the plug wires and the actual plugs.
Thanks! I also attached a picture for your viewing pleasure; they are in the 1975, my wife is on the right!
Removing the rad is a PITA also. Believe me I have done it twice.
For cam, I was running HE260H for a while with stock heads and TH400, making 212 rwhp. A lot of guys run XE268H making close to 240 rwhp depending on tranny/timing/carb....
Let us know how much fun you have removing the rad.
From what I remember, remove the fan, hoses etc. along with the bolts that hold the support from inside the wheel wells. Don't bother trying to remove the shroud separately. Have fun.
Thanks I will be looking forward to the Rad removal! At least the car only has 35K miles! To be honest the cam change is just less expensive and i have to get car money approved thru the wife!
I just need the Cam and lifters right? With the low miles I cannot imagine the Chain or Gears need replacing
Your going to have to remove the waterpump, timming chain cover, so concider any gaskets you may need including antifreeze, lube for the cam etc. As for the timming chain, well you'll know once you have the cover off. As desi stated, your most difficult part of the job will probably be the re and re of the rad. Some people have gone as far as removing the hood to make the rad removal easier.
Did this swap back in 2001 before I went the full rebuild route. Already had true duals and headers.
Swapped in the Crane Powermax 272. Good cam for a daily driver. If I remember correctly, it spec'ed out at 216 @.050 duration and .454 lift total on both sides. Really made the car wake up.
Also suggest a good tune. Recurve distributor for 36 mechanical all in by 2500 rpm. Had Lars help me tune the carb for new setup and went from 72/46 primary jet/rod combo to 74/47.
BTW, the radiator shroud is a major PITA. #1 reason that I changed over to electric fans.
If you plan on a head swap in the future, you'd require a different cam. If I were you I'd save the money and start a heads, cam and intake manifold fund. Your carb will be adequate for a while. It's the synergy of the parts that will really wake up your choked out SB. I had the stock 225hp until I doubled the hp all in one weekend, it was worth the wait. Gorgeous wife by the way.

Thanks! Thats what I was thinking, I really only want to do this once! If I plan using XE268H( Duration 268/280, Lift .477/.480) as my cam what Vortec Heads would be the best?
I personally like Summit's cam and lifter kits. Cost less and their cams are made by crane. I can't remember really but I think mine was the 1102 or 1103
Dug deep in to the forums when I had to change mine and found I put the 1103 in mine. 214/224 at .050, good for low compression.
