Default Bypassed the Heater Core Valve...

Ok, I went thru the labor of changing the Heater Core with the help of my friend 454Big (or Big454, I always mix that up) and installed new heater hoses (core to engine). However, I did not use the Heater Control Valve when re-connecting as the old thing in the car was nothing but a rotten piece of metal. I even think it had been non-functional for umpteen years. Will that cause trouble or anything? Didn't drive much as yet (only about a mile, in fact) and the heating is STRONG. You could remove old paint with that heat!

Thank you!

But now you have a constant of hot coolant through the core :(. Must be hot in the car! I believe those valves are only about $15.00 at local auto parts suppliers.

If you have A/C and want to use it, or just get fresh cool air into the interior through the air vents, you'll have to install a shutoff valve in the hose to the heater core. Can install a manual shut off which would require you to stop, open hood and open or close as desired, which could be a pain in the a__ when engine is hot. Or, you can as has been suggested, purchase a new OEM type vacuum operated shut off valve which closes/shuts off water to heater core when A/C is switched on. This valve is open when no vacuum, and needs vacuum to close and stop the flow of hot coolant through the heater core.

Hope this helps.
