Default Rebuilding Rear Break Callipers

I am having a hard time braking lose the mounting bolts on the rear callipers. I want to rebuild the callipers with o-rings, I have already done the fronts. I can remove the brake lines.

Is it posible to rebuild calipers while they are still on car as long as I can loosen the calliper bolts?

You have to remove the calipers in order to get at the pistons. Have thecalipers already been sleeved with Stainless Steel. If not you are wasting your time. Those bolts can be very stubborn but they will come out with some work. Make sure you get a 6 point socket on them. The 12 points tend to round off the corners.

Thanks, the fronts were re-sleeved so I assumed the rear are. I am also replacing the rotors that why I thought I would be able to rebuild without taking off car.

Well it was a dumb idea anyway.

If you split the caliper in half then the rotor should be able to come off and the pistons could come out. It is not really the right way to do it but it should work tha tway. I would prefer to take the whole caliper off but you might find you can't get it off.

What happens if you use the o-ring conversions on non-ss sleeved calipers?

If the bore is good no problem but after all these years the bores may be pitted as most of them are unless the car was driven regularly.
Be sure to check the runout but that might be the reason for the O ring calipers too?

Thank you GTR

The reason i was asking is because i am about to rebuild my brake calipers and i have ordered the O-ring conversion kits for them.

If the sleeves are bad is it possible to shift them yourself to SS ones?

Sorry for being a rookie , but what exactly is "runout" and how do i measure it, i have a dialwatch on a magnetic base but i am not exactly sure where to measure and how to correct it :o

And sorry for hijacking your thread Kodac.

You can sleeve them if you have a Bridgeport and know how to use it. It's not worth it, go to Muskegon Brakes and for about $65 you'll have a SS caliper. If your runout and endplay are under the .003" you're good.
