Is this normal?
Getting ready to paint, etc. The car has been repainted before. I removed the windshield and noticed that just below each bottom corner of the windshield the body seams are calked. This is the outside edge of the cowl and the inner fender seam. On top there is about 3/4" of dried up putty, which I removed, thinking to replace with a modern paintable calking. Below that, there is a hard filling material like epoxy, which is also loose now. Taking a second look, it appears that with all this removed, the rain water would drain through the body seams and out the bottom, but with it calked the water will just sit there. One side of this void is the windshield frame, and it looks like rust waiting to happen. Is this normal/correct? Should I replace the calking or remove it? I think I'll pour some water on the open joint and see if it goes inside or out. PS, the car is a 69.
