C3 Trans Problem

I am installing original shifter in my 71.I'm thinking about taking the trans out.It has a slight grind going into 4th gear,only when te trans gets hot. Oil level is full.I have no idea how old the gear oil is. Has any one had this problem.Is there anything I could do other than having the trans rebuilt.If it needs to be rebuilt does anyone know of a good rebuilder in Southeastern Michigan.Thanks for any help

drain the old lube, install new lube with GM's gear oil additive

Yes change the lube, mine looked like mud and I had to hold my nose it stunk so bad. I don't know what it was but it wasn't grease anymore. Drain plug in bottom of mine. It was hard to shift before.
