Default How do you check u-joints

I have half shafts and driveshaft out. Both driveshaft joints are kind of tight and have a "catch" in them when moved. Half shaft joints are smooth and easier to move. What is the criteria for replacement?

Thanks
Neil

They're cheap, just replace them while you're in there.

If the driveshaft joints have a "catch" they are most likely bad. The half shalts outer joint usually fails first. If you have grease fittings, grease the joints and look for any trace of orange on the grease that comes out.

U-Joints should work smoothly and have no lost motion as torque is reversed across each joint. Any that are not smooth or have ANY visable lost motion should be replaced. For the outer half shaft joints, it is VERY helpful, imperitive in my mind, to bolt up the flange to a heavy steel plate when driving the U-Joint cups into the flange.
