Default HEI Distributor for a 72

I have a 1972 is there a HEI type distributor that has tack drive and can be used with the one wire. Or is there a good conversion unit for my original points distributor. Any suggestions?
thanks

They do make an HEI distributor that is tach drive (I've seen it at Mid America).

Just out of curiosity, why do you want an HEI distributor? I'm running my standard point distributor, and am more then happy with the performance. (Of course Lars helped out with that). Also, an HEI will not fit underneath the show chrome distributor cover on a 72.

Somebody on Epay sells them for around $200. I think the feedback was good too.

Call Motorville 1-888-463-0482 ... HEI w/ tach drive Motorville P/N MTR.9200TDR ... price now down to about $160. I'm certain it's a nice piece ... complete from coil to gear.

-edit- here ya go: middle column, bottom of page, MTR.9200TDR http://www.motorville.com/tabloid/page_50.htm

Or you can get a later electronic tach, swap the face to match your interior, and not mess around with a custom dizzy.

It's MUCH easier to R&R a new distributor than going into dash & swapping in a '75-'77 tach ... I've done both. True, the HEI doesn't fit the '72 chrome distributor shielding very well ... but it'll fit the distributor shielding from a '75 ... that is if you truly want to keep the distributor shielding ... if you use spiral/helical conductor sp wires and the chrome distributor shielding is not necessary as an RFI barrier.

I switched my 71 to HEI with tach drive. Be aware that you can't use the standard wiring now for your HEI. It needs to have a constant 12 volts to run so no more using the original wires that ran to your coil as it originally had a voltage drop from 12 to like 9 (I think) after starting. Not that big of a problem to get that constant 12 volt source but you need to know that going in. Good luck!

Or you can save yourself a lot of $$ by using a Crane xr-i, or Pertronics conversion.

If radio RFI noise is a problem, grounding your air cleaner to the frame will take 98-100% of that away.

No clearance problems for me. I'm running a 350 with a Weiand Action Plus intake and Speed Demon 750. Fits with the washer pump on the firewall too.

Keep your OEM distributor and get the Petronix conversion kit. Looks stock, no fit problems, and no tach drive changes to make.
