Default Fan shroud removal

I am in need of some help in removing my fan and shroud off my71 s/b with a/c. On the pulley shaft with the fan is a clutch or balancer looking device. Does the fan, this balancer, and pulley all come off together? Also, how many bolts on the shroud? I have removed four(2 on top and 2 on bottom) so far. Are there are more?

Default Carefully...

This is one of the tougher jobs to do properly. Two sets of hands is a must, and the radiator must come out with the shroud. Is the shroud still in one piece? Many, many shrouds have been cut (front to back in the center) at the bottom to allow the shroud to come out and leave the radiator alone. Mine was this way when I got mine and it's been real nice. It has a aluminum plate across the cut that is screwed down. It allows you to push the bottom together (overlapping) enough to clear the upper control arms and remove it. The fan clutch/fan assembly does need to come off to remove it. If yours is intact, don't cut it because you can't undo it on an original one, but I'd cut a reproduction piece in a heartbeat to solve this headache!

I put the motor in my car quicker than it took to put the fan shroud on without bending the fins on the radiator. Cutting the shroud sounds like a good fix to me. Good Luck

The shroud is orginal so I guess I will need to remove radiator and shroud at the same time. I have to get the fan, pulley and balancer out first. I wasn't sure how that came out but now I know if I remove the pulley the fan and balancer will come out also. One more question, the radiator petcock valve is accessible from under the car?

Petcock on a 74 is accessible from underneth.

On 74s, there are 3 bolts from the side that hold the shroud as well. On yours it may be different. Just check before forcing anything...

The petcock is on the pass side bottom corner on my 75, most likely the same on yours.

What Wrencher said is definately true, get a friend to help you. I just pulled mine, pulling an uncut shroud with the radiator is the way to do it. You'll have to force the top brace forward (the bolts are in the wheel well) with the air cond condensor as far as it'll go, even into the vacuum canister for the headlight to get the damn radiator/shroud assembly out. It's not a fun job. Tape a piece of cardboard against the radiator fins to keep the shroud from damaging them. Good luck with it.
