Default Engine rebuild recommendations

Well, it's time to start the engine rebuild on our 72. I'm taking the engines class at the community college this fall, and this engine will be my project. We're looking to increase the power a bit, but still keep the stock ram horn exhaust manifolds (to mate up with the Allen's chambered exhaust), Q-jet carb, etc. This will be a street car, but we'd like more "grunt" than the stock 350, without sacrificing too much reliability or the ability to use pump gas.

Any suggestions as to which components to use will be greatly appreciated:

Heads?
Intake manifold?
Cam?
Pistons/rods?
Lifters/rockers?
etc.

TIA

Trans is TH400, 3.55 gears in rear end, stock hood for L48 engine.

RPM won't fit well, Performer 2101 is fine. TRW Forged or KB hyper. w/ stock rods & ARP bolts. Comp 260H or XE256 for smooth idle. XE262 & 268H are similar & both will give a nice cammed idle. Comp anti pump up lifters & roller tip rockers.

Don't forget to have the whole mess balanced by a competent machine shop. Makes a world of difference in longevity.

With respect to camshaft recomendations: If yur gonna run cast iron exuast manifolds, I would go not bigger than XE262. The H260 is a good choice too as it closely matches the stock L82 grind.

For intake manifold, I would go with the EDL-2101. Its the same height as the stock cast manifold. Its good to 5500rpm. Its not a highrise and it wont cause hood clearence problems.

Look for modifications that increase low end power. The reason I say this is because your plans to retain the stock exaust manifolds will somewhat limit the benifit you would gain from items that would increase mid range and top end power.

Your 72 probably has points ignition. I would look into a ignition conversion kit like one offered from Pertronix.

Your final tuning will be just as important as you initial parts selection.

Have fun. Is the whole class gonna be workin on this thing? :yesnod: It all depends on the knowledge of your teacher and the equipment you have available to you. Everyone has a chance to learn here. :yesnod: I like the idea.

"lyonsh"-------

Here's my recommendations:

cylinder heads------1) AFR #1001 (74 cc comb cham, w/heat riser passage) (expensive, but the best)
2) Edelbrock Performer (70 cc comb chamber w/heat riser passage)
3) GM "fast burn" (requires adapters if perimter bolt valve covers are to be used)

intake manifold------Edelbrock Performer #2101 (The only one that will RELIABLY fit under your 72 sb hood)

pistons-------------Keith Black Silvolite Hypereutectic---KB #228 (about 9.5:1 with (1) and (2) heads)

camshaft-----------Speed Pro #1070-KR hydraulic roller camshaft and lifter kit

rods----------------stock, resized, magnafluxed, shot-peened with ARP Wave Lok rod volts

rockers-------------1) Crower stainless steel (expensive)
2) GM #12361320 (set of 16 aluminum rockers)
3) Crane NitroCarb stamped steel

head gaskets--------Fel-Pro #1003 (2 required) (expensive)

rocker cover gaskets---Fel-Pro #1604 (expensive)

oil pan gasket-------Fel Pro 1 piece #OS34509-T

intake man gasket---GM #10147994

rear main seal------ GM #10121044

oil pump------------GM #12555284

oil pan-------------stock

carburetor----------stock Q-Jet, rebuilt

Now this is more like it. Thanks for the recommendations, ALL. :D

And to answer the questions, I'll be working on this myself - I know most of the guys in the class, and wouldn't let most of them near my engine.
OTOH, the instructor has an outstanding reputation. He builds his own engines for his street and pro stock dragsters, and has won several championships. And the school has a pretty well equipped machine shop, so things are looking pretty good. I'll certainly discuss what I want to do with the instructor, but wanted some "a second opinion" from folks who have rebuilt Vette engines. Thanks again!
