I have 2 Q-Jets on my bench right now... one has a warped top, the other has a worn-out throttle body (shaft/bores).

They're both repairable... one requires a special tool to straighten the top (Lars said he was going to buy it so I could borrow it), the other needs to be machined for a throttle shaft bushing.

Along with a stripped fuel inlet or sour gas damage, these are the main issues when a Q-Jet is deemed "un-repairable".

"We can rebuild him... we have the technology."

Your mechanic may have been referring to a worn throttle shaft... which is at the bottom of the Q-Jet. This can be repaired. I do this repair all of the time, and the performance of the carb before/after is like night and day. This is usually the "last resort" repair after the experts give up on it.
