Default harmonic balancer

How do you tell if the harmonic balancer slipped and Is the timing mark suposed to line up with the keyway..MY timing is off about 90 degrees

Can try using a little mirror and see if the elastomer ring between inner and outer pieces is broken or frayed. You will have to pull off lower fan belt pulley first to see the ring. If your timing is that far off that is probably a good bet it has slipped. The keyway on my fluid dampner is close to TDC but not right on it. Chevys usually don't break the keyways in the crank so would check the balancer first, houstonvett

Mark the balancer with a paint pen from underneath the car.
You have more room to work with from the bottom. run it
and see if it moves again.

pull number 1 cylinder up to top dead center, and see where the timing mark is...if it is off even a fraction, the balancer has moved, and is bad.

watch out it will get into the timing cover and ruin lots of stuff.
