Default Distributer question

When I tuned the 78,discovered dist weights frozen..(already installed new shaft, vette running now)...
What bugs me is I had been driving it in that condition and had no indication of no advance...even up to 90 mph.....occasionally,when shutting engine off,I would get a "pooff" out exhaust...I attributed that to a rich condition...

Could someone explain how this thing ran like it did??? Started good, ran good, accelerated with no hesitation,etc...could'nt move weights at all

From: Las Vegas - Just stop perpetuating myths please.
Default Too many varibles to know y.

Well aparently the advance was such that pre-ignition did not destroy the eng. And not retarded enough to prevent pwr production on the pwr stroke of piston.

Heck look at General Aviation propeller driven aircraft. They're stuck with 1940's ignition technology (magnetos) due to beuarucratic regulation and run at only 1 advance/timing setting. Yup all those little aircraft flying over our hds have no variable adv ignition. Well at least 99% do as just in the last few yrs some electronic controls with an actual timing curve - and yes a manifold/vac adv also - are being retrofitted.

Hope this helps answer ur question more than it confuses u Rich.

Makes sense..thanks...I was guessing it froze at a "sweet spot"...but this aspect is not my strength/knowledge...this vette has never "pinged"...but always keep it maintained/carb clean,etc...another thing that got me was gas mileage...15-16 highway at speed limits..got to check what I'll get now...I'm just a lucky noob,I guess..
