Default input for 383 build

Helping out selecting pieces for engine build-ups seems to be a favorite topic here, so I thought I'd tap into this vast reserve of knowledge for some guidence. So far, I've got a roller block, with the rotating assembly and KB .030 flattops on the way. Now for the fun part....

Parts on the wish list so far are:
Comp Cams #08-450-8 286drgs, 230 @ .050, .560 lift
Dart pro 1 heads #11421112 72cc chamber, 200cc runner, 2.02/1.60 valves
Edelbrock RPM air-gap
Holley 750

I haven't bought any of these parts yet, so nows the time to make any adjustments to the list. We get 92 octane gas here, so any combo has to be compatible(reason for thinking 72cc's). Let's hear your advice, all input welcome!

BTW, engine will go into a 68 coupe, 200-R4 trans/2200 stall, 3:73 gears

I wish I had used an engine build program like "Dyno-Sym" or "Engine Anaylizer Pro" before I built mine. Now I am in the process of making changes. Down-load the demo version of Engine Analyzer and try it. It will teach you about how engines work and perhaps save you some money...

I did the same setup that smokedtires displayed from the AFR site.

I LOVE it.

Hard to believe it runs that hard with no power adders using pump gas.

My engine is in the shop right now, getting similiar parts, the engine dyno is scheduled for next Thursday a.m.

Stock L-82 block, stroked to 383, Dart Pro 1 heads 180cc intake port 11121112, 64cc heads, Comp 12-432-8 or XR282HR-10 cam (retro roller), Comp Pro Magnum roller rockers, Dart Kool Kan intake (similiar to Edelbrock Air Gap, no longer available), a few other goodies.

I'll post the dyno results as soon as I get them.

I went with the AFR 195 heads. They are the 74 cc strait plug style. For pistons I used the JE - SRP forged flat tops with the two valve relieve.

I decked the block taking .020 off leaving the pistons .005 down in the hole.

Looks like the AFR's and dual pattern cams suggested would be a better choice than what I had in mind. With the 68cc chamber AFR head, what kind of compression will I get using a flattop piston(KB100030-8, 7cc in the valve reliefs)? CR is my main concern now, as I don't care to be the first on my block to have a diesel Corvette! Thanks for all the help guys, I'm sure glad I found this forum!

I have a very similar cam for my 396SBC build. I have some 200cc Aluminum Pro Topline heads that I'm doing alot of work on. Do you have any dyno numbers? How does it sound?

"With the 68cc chamber AFR head, what kind of compression will I get using a flattop piston(KB100030-8, 7cc in the valve reliefs)?"

I'm comming up with 10.45 using:
.038 gasket
-7 cc pistons
68 cc heads
0 deck height clearance

If you go with standard deck height of .025" it will be 9.89
.038 gasket
-7 cc pistons
68 cc heads
.025 deck height clearance

I used Engine analyzer to get these mesurements.

Good luck.

sorry, just now responding..been busy with school. I don't have dyno numbers on my engine, but my engine is built by a respected builder (Golen Engines) and he uses this cam on many 10.2:1CR 383s with AFR 195s, and he gets 500hp/480-500tq all day long. Sounds really mean..and idles really nice, not much lope. I have a clip. 383 vid
