Default Upgrade Master Cyl on 75, what will work?

Hi,

I'm fairly new to the corvette forum and new to Vette's in general, just bought a 75 a few months ago and have bought all new brake components, i.e. master cyl, calipers, rotors, however, instead of putting the new stock type big ol heavy cast iron master cyl back on the car, I want to see if there's an alum version that would work instead. Like one from a newer vette or the like?

Have a 70 Superbee as well, and I replaced it's old cast iron master cyl w/ a newer dodge alum unit, which weighed about 25% of that of the original unit.

Already bought an alum short waterpump and pulley for this vette as well, but haven't replaced it yet.

Also wondering if there are any original alum calipers for this 75 that would work off of another GM vehicle? They're heavy as well and I have all 4 new calipers for it from the parts store waiting to be replaced also. I know that reducing the unsprung weight on the wheels is beneficial as well.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Todd...
Oh yes, the Vette has a cool lookin body kit, turbo hood, is a 75, 383 ci, camel hump, angle plug heads, 4 speed, red, t-tops. MSD, HEI, Holley, Headers, flowmasters, holley electric fuel pump, fuel loop, and has been to Hawaii and back and is now in south texas!! cool deal! Also lays longer black marks than the 440 Superbee! I'm very impressed so far!

I know there is an aluminum replacement that I saw a couple days ago, but don't remember who made it. Check the supporting vendors here and I think you'll find what you are looking for.

I believe the aluminum MC runs about $450. Pretty pricey for a few pounds of weight savings. Unless you want to retrofit your brake system with Wilwoods or the like you're pretty much stuck with the stock units. No GM units interchange. To go with aftermarket you'll need new brackets as well as the calipers. Keith at Corvette Engineering (supporting vendor) makes a Wilwood kit. As long as you don't have excessive runout at the wheels and the calipers are o-ringed they should work fine. Unsprung weight is always a good thing but only if you're planning to race the car. Just make sure you bleed the system well and pay attention to the bleeding sequence at the rear (middle bleeders first, top last). Use a good quality DOT 3 or 4 brake fluid and make sure the entire system is flushed.

Thanks for the info guys,

That bites that there's no aluminum master cyl that is compatible w/ the dual bold pattern master cyl that comes on the 75 Vette.

Bought a new aluminum master cyl for a 90's dodge truck to rerplace my Superbee's old cast iron unit. Was only $30 total w/ like a $12 core charge for the old iron unit!

Will let you know what I find, if anything regarding this desired swap.

FYI, have already snagged a mini starter off of ebay as well as an aluminum waterpump and aluminum waterpump pulley off of ebay for a song, all new.

Have been used to attempting to lighten up the Superbee for years, guess I'm just carrying that attitude over to the Vette now!??

Have also been looking at the tunnel rams for the Vette, however, we sit so low in that Vette, not sure if I'd be able to see over the tunnel ram and scoop once installed. Any onput about this? Maybe there's already a thread about this?

I ran a s.b. 383 4-speed w/ a tunnel ram w/ scoop in my 73 camaro and didn't have any visibility probs, however after looking on the net at some vettes w/ the tunnel ram and scoop am now wondering if the cops would hassle me about not being able to see past the tunnel ram. i.e. blind spot issues?

Thanks again!

Sincerely,

Todd...

Default Vette Vs. Bee...

Hi Greg,

Thanks,

The Bee was originally Plum purple w/ a white vinyl roof, from Omaha, Nebraska prior to my owning it. Bought it while I was in the Air Force at F.E. Warran A.F.B. in Cheyenne, Wyoming, from a Matt Foster who said he had the Bee running mid 12's w/ the old 383 he had in it prior to pulling it out of the car and selling the car to me, w/ supposedly the same 383 rebuilt in a crate in the hobby shop on base...

Bee is now a funky redish purple, NOT plum at all, w/ a painted black roof and has the two separate scoops on the hood along w/ all of the functional original ram air plumbing underneath...

Bee has:
- 1969 Newport's 440, bored .060 over,
- Hemi purpleshaft cam 284/.484,
- Hyper flat tops
- Forged crank n rods, compliments from Factory in ALL factory big block mopar engines thru the early 70's.
- Holley 750 dbl pmpr
- Holley Street Dominator Intake
- Seriously self-ported 452 heads, stock 2.08 valves.(Need to put 2.14's in em sometime soon maybe...)
- 727 Auto, no shift kit in this one yet. Will have very soon!
- MSD 6AL Ignition
- Electronic pickup distributor
- Headers
- Dual Flowmasters (2 chamber, 2.5 inch)
- Aluminum Water pump housing (To save weight)
- Converted to Manual steering box (Saved SERIOUS weight)
- Manual brakes
- 4 wheel drum brakes! QUADRUPLE ouch!
- Dana 60 Rear w/ 4.10:1 posi
- Battery moved to trunk
- Front sway bar removed, upper suspension stoppers removed to allow for more weight transfer, higher wheelie effect.
- Aluminum 2 row Radiator (Works better than I'd imagined!!)
- Used to weigh in right at 3,600 w/o driver, prior to addition of alum rims, alum waterpump housing, manual steering swap. Should be 100-200 lighter now.

- Best run prior to most mods was 13.4 @ 104 mph
- MPG was at 16 mpg way back as well...

Will be draggin the Vette against the Bee sometime soon.

My money's on the Bee, however the Vette's 383 sounds pretty souped up and hauls but in 1st n second...

Vette spins wheels longer distance than the Bee does... However, Vette's tires are old, cracked, and skinnier than the Bee's...

Vette has:
- s.b. 383
- 4-speed
- Ceramicoated Headers
- Dual Flowmasters
- MSD 6AL
- HEI
- Holley Contender intake
- Holley 750 Vacuum
- Direct flex fan
- Turbo hood
- Aftermarket Ground effects package
- Has been setup w/ a holley red? pump and a fuel loop w/ holley fuel press regulator
- Has an oil pressure gauge screwed directly into the driver's side of the engine, back by firewall under headers, which is neat.
- Car has been in Hawaii for some time it seems!! Has Hawaii stickers all over it, found a hawaiian worker ID under seat, had a LOT of two way radio equipment in it... Interesting!

The Vette is red, the cool turbo hood is white, and the ground effects are still grey gelcoat...

Another thing that will be cool, hopefully, is that I've just received a True Fire Paint and template kit!

I may just clear coat that new turbo hood and practice spraying some true fire paint jobs on it to see if I can do it well and see how it will look!

Will post pics if worth posting!

Which car do you/ya'll believe will win in an 1/8th and/or 1/4 mile drag race?

The Bee's REALLY STRONG and is really radical feeling, whereas the Vette seems to be very strong off the line, but seems to be more tame. This may be due to better steering on the Vette vs. the Bee? But I'm not sure.

The Vette seems quieter, both at idle and even when launching it, than the Bee, even though the mufflers are currently disconnected on the Vette, vs the Bee w/ the flowmasters hooked up!

What a poser! Maybe they'll tie? But I doubt it! W/ the 4.10's in the Bee, the Bee pulls hard all of the way thru the 1/4, not sure of the gearing on the Vette, but if the Vette has stock gearing, then the Vette shouldn't be able to take the bee thru the top of the quarter... Not sure what cam's in the Vette, but it sounds pretty healthy and lopes fairly well when idling....

Have a great one!

Todd...

Default Nice vette!

Thnx for the pics.

Looks like the older Vettes, C2? and older may not have the driver sitting as low as the C3 and newer...

I've seen a few pics of c3 and newer vettes w/ tunnel rams and am questioning hwo legal some of these actually are...

I currently have two tunnel rams and one is 6 inches taller than the other, including the scoops, etc!

Tunnel ram #1:
Edelbrock TR1X
- Dual vacuum 600 cfm Holleys, in line
- w/ polished aluminum street scoop.
- 6 inches taller than tunnel ram #2!

Tunnel ram #2:
- Edelbrock TR1Y
- w/ dual 600 cfm Holley vacuums, setup sideways.
- Edelbrock triangle air cleaners...

Just remeasured tunnel rams.

The taller ram is 19.5 inches high from the bottom of the center of the front of the intake to the top of the scoop.

The shorter ram is only 16 inches from bottom to top of air cleaners...

The current "Holley Contender" intake w/ single Holley Vac 750 and short air clearner is 9.5 inches from bottom to top!

So putting the TALLER ram on the car would make the engine stick up an addt'l 10.5 inches outa the engine bay than the engine is currently!!

The shorter ram at 16 inches would be sticking up outa the car an addt'l 7 inches...

I don't mind having a blind spot in the front left of me, that I can actually look around if needbe, just don't want to be pulled over for it.

I work w/ Municipal Court Software and have never seen a city ciolation that could be used for this. I do remember a law being passed in Houston way back where you can't have any shoe polish on your windshield or the like due to a few wrecks that occured due to excessive shoe polish on the cars' windows, etc...

Thanks for any input!

Todd...

OK, have installed a stock replacement Vette master cyl just to get the thing inspected.

Will continue w/ the adaptation of a stock aluminum master cyl off of another vehicle as soon as I get the car inspected.

Need drivers side wiper arm and rear license plate light to get er inspected.

Will look elsewhere on this forum for a 75 Vette wiper arm and rear license plate light.

Does anyone reading this happen to have an extra drivers wiper arm and possibly rear license plate light for a 75 type Vette?

Thanks for any leads/info...

Sincerely,

Todd...

Alot of us run hydroboosts. My stock master cylinder is bolted to the hydroboost. A say 97 GMC truck runs a great sleak looking aluminum master cylinder bolted to a hydroboost. The hydroboost fits out cars. Shouldn't this aluminum master cylinder then bolt to our cars? The brake line ports are on the proper side.
This is something I feel would make a very cheap swap.

Excellent,

Thanks for the info about the parts!

Will probably order the license plate light. Have to see what a stock rear license plate looks like and see if it will fit properly/acceptably on the car. Not sure if the rear of this car is stock or not. May be aftermarket like a lot of the rest of the car is. (Some sort of turbo body kit, has funky taillights, may just be the lenses, not sure.)

Preciate the info a LOT!

Sincerely,

Todd...

Great idea. Neighbor was running hydroboost on his 80's chevy truck. Leaks a lot, so he switched back to entire vacuum system. Said the hydroboost brakes seemed a LOT stronger than the vacuum system...

Will definitely look into this!

Thanks!
