Is this a piece that can be fabricated (rigged or Bubba'd) pretty easily. I have heard some say that it is not a very impressive piece- just foam. But i have not seen one personally - how thick is it etc?
It looks like its about 2.5 or 3 inches square and about 2 feet long. This is in my 77 with manual trans. It should be easy to bubba, as it is a compression fit
Go to Home Depot and get an 8 foot length of hot water pipe insulation and cut it to fit. Stuff it in between the transmission and the tunnel. It will cost about $1.25.

I bought one and have never installed it. It is setting on the shelf out there in the garage. I guess while I have it in the air, I should give it shot and stick it in there. Can't hurt.

Mine is still setting in the garage too....I got under that a few months ago and saw how tight it was between the bell housing and the top of the tunnel, i was like....too hard, small space, probably not going to make a difference
Looking at that picture, which side should go on the driveres side?
I doesn't matter because the area (at least on my car) is so small that is going to flattened like a pancake
I bought mine from Volunteer Vette, a forum sponsor. It wasn't all that expensive. Before I saw it in their catalog, I didn't even know they existed. I've removed transmissions from what I thought were factory original 68's and 69's. They didn't have this horseshoe collar. They must have added it for later years. Looks like a good idea. I've bought one for my 68 and will install it.
The probable purpose of the collar is to keep perhaps 180 degrees F engine compartment air from flowing underneath the top of the transmission tunnel.

Eddie...
According to the AIM it looks like the notch on the right side in the image above would go on the passenger side of the tunnel. Mine came with two sided tape on the inside so that it would stick to the bell-housing as you lowered the body onto the chassis.

I finally got around to doing this tonight. Let me tell you, it made a difference in the way my back feels anyway. I will be testing this little product out very soon. Let's hope it was worth all the digging I was doing.
Will it install easier from under the car when it's on a lift? Haven;t taken a look at where it fits. Have one on my shelf also. Car will be on a lift this week.

I had to be able to reach all the way around the tranny to get a grip on the thing to pull it in. I worked it in on ramps. If you can get close enough to the tranny while it is on the lift, go for it. Mine had been setting on the shelf for years and I finally got around to doing it.
I installed mine from the top and then of course a few months later I had the trans and bell housing out then I installed it from under the car. So far it seems to be working good. It's not summer yet though. I also replaced my lower shifter boot that was completely destroyed so that may have accounted for a lot of my heat problem. I'll keep you posted on whether it makes a $20 difference.
While in pursuit of killing cabin heat I put one in. Found it is easiest to install from engine compartment. It seemed to help a lot, but then again my lower shifter boot was missing and I replaced it at the same time, but the combo of foam and boot dropped temps inside considerably. Hind sight, I probably would have just used 2'' foam from Menards at a cost of $1 as compared to $18 from Corvette Specialties.
