Default Field testing coils

I was wondering what type of tests can be done on the field at Carlisle when one finds a coil that is right for his/her car? I have a digital pocket multimeter that I carry but I want to know what I can do to give me an idea that just MAYBE the coil I am looking at MAY have a chance of having life in it when I get it home. I have seen banged up, bent, and rusted coils that folks are selling and of course "yeah, it works good."

Any ideas folks?

I don't know for certain, however I do know from past experience, on other engines, many coils will work fine when cold, but it's when they get hot that they will quite functioning properly. Don't know if a 'field test' on a cold coil will identify this problem or not..............Opions from others??????????

I am looking for a numbers matching coil since that is the only component my car is missing. I have had experiences with other cars that had coils that worked well cold but not hot.
