What I'm thinking is taking some 1/4 inch steel, and making a mount something like this:
Cut out the center to clear the stock covers bumps... and machine off the batwings.
I've been doing some looking, and on all the cars I've seen with this style batwing, have a 2 inch by 6-8 inch crossmember going across the frame rails in front or behind the batwing.
Stock thats what carries the diff, wonder if you can get more weight savings without the wings?
Edit: Actually, that would put the weight of the car on the bolts... alone... in sheer.
Hmm, maybe not.

With the HP (Past experience) that Monty will be putting to the ground, do you really think that an IR will be useful. Seems like most of his power will be straight line and unusable in turns and a conventional straight axle would work better on coilovers. Just my .02, but I guess I am straying from the C-5/6 topic.
Why does the batwing break on the Dana 44? Is it axle twist from the half shafts. Seems like the half shafts would break first.
the dana 44 batwing doesn't break unless you have very sticky tires and dump the clutch, the only batwing I've ever seen that was broken was a non HD Dana 36 one.
