any body ever make one of these tools???? i'm thinking of trying to find a 6" long bolt with the correct fine thread and buy a bearing from the bolt section at lowes and then use a nut to tighten down the Harmonic balancer....this shouldn't be too difficult if i can find the bolt

Use the installation tool! As others said, Autozone rents many of these specialty tools and if they don't have a damper installation tool for rent, for chris' sakes they're only about $35 to buy outright.
Nope, I did it 4 months ago and it worked fine.

This is what I have used over the years. It has worked very well. I have to find a new bolt though. The threads on mine are about shot.

I have had this bolt for about 20 years. I have no idea. I do have one of my distributers who is a bolt rep and that is where I get all my bolts. I'll try him. The one I used was a socket head bolt.
I know there is a Fastenal located near you. They sell our products and have all kinds of bolts. If they don't have it in stock I'm sure they can get one.

It's amazing to me how many ways can be suggested to half azz a job when there's a $35 f-ing tool out there that can be bought at any corner auto parts store to do a job correctly. What's a new balancer cost? A cheap piece of Szhit Chinese balancer will cost $80 and good one $250+, damaging the thrust flange on a crank will cost you $200-$1200 depending on whether you end up replacing a cast crank or a forged/nitrided racing SB crank...not to mention the labor involved in replacing it.

...Then I read that the normal operating temperature of a balancer is 300 'F + ...Jeezus!! What science fiction novel did you read THAT factoid in?? Your coolant temp. should rarely reach 240'F and if your oil temp exceeds 270' it's starts breaking down into its elemental carbon again, so WTF makes you think your harmonic balancer runs at 300'F all day long???

Heat it, beat it, weld it!? What's the difference????

SIMPLY AMAZING!!!!

Hint to the author of this post: buy a $35 harmonic balancer installation tool and save yourself a lot of grief and having to read posts written by science fiction authors!

Sorry for my rant, and vagueness in expressing my opinion....er, statement of the obvious.

I was instructed to do so by my friend who helped me build the engine and drop it in. Who has been a Mercedes tech for some time now, and a Ford tech before that. There's no conspiracy here. I did it, it worked, enough said. Rant all you want, it can't compare to experience.

And you don't leave it in and set the timer, we're not baking here. Just leave it in for a few minutes. This is also what my buddy with a 67 Camaro did for his SBC.

Here's your science fiction.

Prolly right. 300 degrees running temp is outside the norm. 180-250 what ever it takes to get it on there will help.

I have actually seen clear rocker covers at a local show before. But they were coated with oil, and it didn't look that cool. Thanks though.

Very true, and I'm sure a few minutes at 400 degrees won't actually bring the balancer to 400 degrees.
