Give us a little more info. With engine running and wiper door closed, can you open the wiper door by using the override switch under the dash? You did say it opens... And then when you push the override switch back up the wiper door does not close? How about when you use the wiper switch? If wiper door is closed and you turn the wiper switch on, does the door open and wipers work? Then when you turn the wipers off do they stop working, park, and then the wiper door does not close? (they may not be fully parked).
With Engine off, and you have manually closed the wiper door by gently pressing it down into place - When you start the engine, does the wiper door pop open on its own, or will it stay closed until you either turn on the wipers or use the manual override switch?
Fully describing what works and when will help others diagnose your problem... probably not me! MJ
It was closed and i reconnected a lose hose. When i turned the engine on it opened and now it wont close at all even with the engine off and me pushing on it fairly hard. I dont want to break anything.
First, you should be able to close the wiper door, assuming there is nothing blocking it and its not broke, with the engine OFF as follows:
1. Remove the rubber plug on the back of the actuator can, gold colored vaccuum can on the passanger side fire wall. This will give you access to the actuator rod and diaphragm.
2. Using a dowel or similar blunt rod, gentley push in the center of the diaphragm. Becareful NOT to push on the rubber part of the diaphragm or you may ruin it. :cry
3. It will help if you assist the door closed as you push the actuator.
Possible reasons why the door won't close yet will open.
1. Vaccuum bypassed by the manual switch under the dash below tach.
2. Wipers not fully parked, either override switch engaged or the park switch in the wiper motor not working.
3. Missing a ground or bad wiper solenoid which is under the center console.
4. Hose off the pneumatic selector valve, under right fender follow the hoses on the actuator.
For about $50 or less you can get a brake bleed vaccuum pump at your local auto parts store. Wonderful tool for troubleshooting the vaccuum system.
Mine did the same thing... found the over-ride switch had lost a bolt and wasn't sensing the wipers were parked. Push the plunger in on the over-ride switch and see if the door closes. If you don't know what we are talking about, I will take a photo of it tomorrow.

Rick nailed it there. The "failsafe" mode for these wiper doors is to OPEN if there's a problem. Everything you do to get the door to close is applying a vacuum somewhere along the chain where it eventually acts against a spring in the vacuum relay. Interrupt that vacuum ANYWHERE and that spring will direct the vacuum to the "open" side of the actuator and the door will open.
Your task now is to trace the small vacuum line from underhood where it goes into the firewall, all the way to the relay. Check at every connection that line makes. Eventually you'll come to either:
a) A leak
b) the relay.
if you have vacuum going all the way to the relay, then your relay is bad (check this first just in case)
Got it to work now with the wiper switch on the dash. I took off the chrome piece in front of the wiper door and found a hose that had come loose. Now it works but the overide switch does nothing which is wierd but oh well as long as the main switch continues to work. Thanks for the help.
