I orderded a new starter harness from Bairs corvettes to put on my 80. It was an L48 4 speed, but now is a 383, still with the 4 speed. The harness I got had 5 wires on it, in two rows of three, missing a wire on the middle of a row, which plugged into the engine bay harness. The starter harness I am replacing has 6 wires, the one additional wire being a blue wire. It combines with a black wire off the same harness and goes to a plug, which was not connected on my car.
What makes these two harnesses different? Automatic vs. standard? L48 vs. L82? What is the extra wire for?
When I got the car, it was pretty butchered, so I am not sure what vette the harness in the car came from.

Wow... sorry I can't help with this one. My 80 is in the paint shop...or I would go out and take a look...but from memory, I don't recall this many wires.
The L-82 has an extra wire that goes down by the starter for the auxilliary cooling fan. There is also a separate temp sensor on the side of the passenger cylinder head that goes with it. L-48 does not use any of these so you can cut and tape or just tape it out of the way to confuse future owners.
It actually hasn't caused much trouble, although I am surprised the factory 4 speed is still intact. I did blow two motor mounts, sending the carb stud and alternator bracket through the hood, but I added solid mounts and it's okay now. The buildup on the motor was based on parts selection that yielded 510 hp on another 383, but I have never dynoed my motor or car.
The rearend seems to be pretty stout. It is a D44 built by a shop called Tex Racing, somewhere in the Carolinas I believe. It has 3.73 gears, and stock halfshafts and U joints. I have aluminum bushings mounting the batwings to the frame.
When I bought the car the one thing the previous owner did was throw the Vette Brakes and Performance catalog at it. It seemingly has all their heavy duty suspension parts on it, which probably helps to.
