Is there any source for info in the L46 350 in my '69. How strong of a motor is it. Wha tkind of mods can it take. I havent been able to find out to much about it at all. Thanks :chevy
There are quite a few books you can get to tell you about it. I think one of the best books for 69 owners is the 1969 Stingray Guidebook by Rick Bizzoco. The L46 is basically the same as an LT1, only without the mechanical cam and lifters, and pressed in rocker studs instead of screwed in ones. Everything else is the same. Forged pistons, crank, 2.02 heads, "pink" rods, 11:1 compression. One of the better muscle car era Chevy small blocks.
Your L46 should have 186 heads, "double hump" with 2.02/1.60 valves. You should have either a 3932386 or 3970010 4-bolt main block depending on the production date of your car. Is it the original motor in the car?
What kind of mods do you have in mind? Do you know the condition of the engine in general, specifically the bottom end? The L46 is a pretty stout unit with solid parts, but you should get a good status on the health of your motor before modifying it. Do you have good compression, no leakdown, good oil pressure, etc?
The engine runs very strong right now no leaks or smoke of any kind, oil pressure is good. I havent done a compression check. I probally wont be doing anything for a while i just wanted to know what the limits of this engine were. It is the original block and i assume internals but i dont know for sure it has a holley 750 edlebrock torker intake and a crane cam all put in around 92. Thanks for the info.
