Drop Base Air Cleaner
Am preparing to install an RPM Airgap and either Holly or Demon Carb... Any suggestions for a good drop base aircleaner and what drop amount I should be looking at?
I've got the Performer RPM (same dimensions) and a Mighty Demon, Summit sells a 1 1/4" (about) drop base assembly for $40 that clears the stock 78 hood with this combo.

The K&N X-Stream breathes through the top too...and lots of colors..the 14" with the 4 3/4 drop works great...however an Air Gap manifold WON'T fit under a stock hood.(no hood specified in your post, but thought inquiring minds would want to know)

If your working on the 80. It will fit. These year models have the bump in the hood which makes it possible. I have a similar motor in a 82 with a RPM air gap and a 770 Street Avenger and with a drop down filter. In fact, it will be a little easier for you. I had to cut the cold air duck from under my hood, I don't think you have any extra meat under yours. Like I said earlier, I bought my filter at Auto Zone bought a K&N filter at A/Z (3" high...you could go shorter) I also bought the extreme top(Summit)I wanted to make sure I got enough air. The drop down base, I bought locally, also cleared my choke and dist. I had to loose the pretty wing nut, tho. Good luck. Larry

Not my car...but the hood is the model that will be installed when it comes out of the paint shop in about 5 weeks.
This is the Summit drop base assembly and the Summit top. Over my Mighty Demon and my Performer RPM which I believe is dimensionally identical to the air gap version, all under the stock hood.

My 74 has air gap w/drop base and fits w/ 3/4" space. My dyno guy told me that w/drop base a filter lid helps. The air has to make a turn into the carb. The lid helps smooth the air.

And it fits by the HEI too....sweet! I'm trying to get something to shoehorn my Vic Jr and Holley 750dp under my stock sb '68 hood and here's hoping this setup does the trick!

I ordered the drop base setup as noted above and all works well under the stock hood of my 80! Only diff overall is I am using an RPM Air Gap intake and a Speed Demon Carb.
