It is brand new, 4 bolt, three year waranty. Afreind got it to hop up a bit, but it dynoed at just under 300 HP. It is under $1500.00. Old style valve cover bolts. Any ideas on how to get 30 more HP.

Good base, but you need to be careful about what cam you pick. The CR of 8.5 to 1 is going to limit you. The L82 cam (.450 lift, around 220 duration) seems to be a good cam for low compression motors. Not a bad deal for $1500. I'd drop 58cc heads on to it to bump up the compression, and run a higher lift cam. Then it'd scream.

Good call on the heads and cam. 58 cc L98 heads should really help waken up throttle response and torque. These heads aren't very expensive (there is a complete pair on ebay for $600) and will save about 50 lbs in weight.

Do a google search on the 'Goodwrench quest' to see what Chevy Hi Performance got out of it, I bought one and stabbed a little bigger cam in it to start and went up from there.

Here is a good link:

Call me nuts but the thing that kills me about GM crates is the Mexican Made Hyper pistons.

I would never install an engine without aluminuym heads due to the octane available.

Installed one in my 78'. Added Al heads and cam, worked great.
Pace has them for $1295.

I have beat the hell out of mine, 6500 rpm's a number of times when I had a roller cam in it, it has lived so far but I am going to keep it below 6k from now on so it will keep going for a few more years

BTW I don't think the piston's are hyp, just the plain cast alum, the hyp piston come in the zz4 and 383 eng's
