I am trying to remove my taillight housings on my 71 to paint the car and the studs from the lights want to twist off. I am sure I am not the first one this has happened to. can you remove the old stud from the housing and just replace the stud?

just remove the nuts from the back and beat it gently out... thats it.. i have done this many times.
If the stud is twisting and wont unscrew then you can cut the stud with threads out or back it off enough to get a pair of plier on the head and maybe get the nut to turn off...unless you are going for NCRS "foo foo" then it doesn't matter ...you can replace it with a standard bolt and nut, the lens covers everything up.

OK.... make sure you make each light with its exact position... not all back tail light housings are created equal... the two outsides are both turn and stop light and the inner ones are just backup... do not get them confused...and that goes for the bulbs also.
