Default Should I pull engine to do this stuff.

Got a few projects to do here shortly, including installing some aluminum heads and headers. This in itself probably wouldn't warrant pulling the engine, but I'm also planning on converting from an auto to a four speed and I'm thinking it might be easier (and I'd do a better job) if I went ahead and pulled the engine. I just rebuilt it a few years ago, so I know the routine and I have the puller. What do you think?

The only other way to get the transmission out without pulling the engine is to lift the car pretty far off the ground. If you have that capability, you won't need to pull the engine. If you can't get the car up pretty high, then you'll need to pull them out at the same time.

Thanks for the comments. I can probably get it high enough... Even if I pulled the engine I'd still pull them out separately so I don't have to take off the hood. It just seems kinda dumb not to pull the engine if in the fully disassembled stage I'm just going to have a short block sitting in there. Regards.

I maybe easier to pull the engine and install the auto with the engine...it may be tough getting the tranny up without a tranny jack...and to use the jack, the body has to be way up off the ground.

Ooops, you want to pull the auto...same obstacle as installing, have to get the car way up in the air...

If I had the choice of being on my back for three hours with gunk dripping in my hair and all over my face versus five minutes to undo four hood bolts I believe I'd choose the latter.

So yeah, one vote here for pulling engine/tranny together

24" off the ground to get the tranny underneath on the tranny jack.
