If the shifter is adjusted right it probably is a worn slider. The tranny will pop out of gear especialy when you get on-off-on the gas. You will need to overhaul the tranny and replace the worn parts.
Probably a synchronizer. If the transmission is fine otherwise, get a price to replace the synchronizers. I once put synchronizers in a M21 without a manual, put it back together the way it came apart. It worked fine, don't know how much was luck and how much was skill...
Mine was popping out of second and was also hard to get in sometimes. I was told it was synchronizers. I just bought them, now it's time to tear it apart.
Depending on how it was used or abused it could be just the brass syncros or it might get into the slider and even 2nd gear if the teeth are rounded or broken. Check the shifter adjustment first if that doesn't work then you'll have to pull the tranny out and open it up for a look. I just go in an issue of C.E magazine and they did a tech story on rebuilding a Muncie. There are a couple of assembly procedures in it that I wouldn't do, but it will give you a good idea what the internals look like.
once its in second all the way and under power it stays its just that i dont think that it is gettin all the way in gear is there an adjustment somewhere to see if that is it
If it stays in gear under a load and pops out when you lift, it's most likely a broken or worn syncro key. The key is the thing that keeps the slider engaged. You could have wear on the gear engagement teeth or in the slider too but the wear would have to be on the coast side to make it pop out of gear only when you lift. Worn syncros and blockers make it hard to get into gear but once its in, if everything else is okay, it'll stay. You could also have an issue with the lever cams and detents but, again, that will usually also show up under load too and it also will not have a positive feel in the detents through the shifter handle when you shift it in and out of gear with the engine off.
You can adjust the shifter but I strongly doubt that will solve anything and could in fact cause more problems by overshifting. Easiest is to consult either a Chilton's or a service manual since it's hard to explain exactly how to do it right without pictures and a step-by-step.
