Default Heat from Headers

My headers put off an incredible amount of heat and my spark plug boots & wires are very close. I don't want that to become a problem. Anyone know where I can get spark plug boot heat protectors like those that come on the C5s?

Summit has em. Just do a search on their page for "boot protectors"

You might also go to the shorter plugs Accel makes, that will give you a little more room. I know I had to go to them

This is a post I ran a while ago on header wrap. I really like the stuff. My headers stay really cool

I have run Hedman wrapped headers for at least 10 years without a problem. I decided to upgrade my headers with hedman again and since they don't make their elite header in 2 inch for the bigblock I went with the normal 2 inch header and wrapped them. It takes a complete 50 foot roll per header.
The big thing with using wrap is to soak it well before using. Once wet it is very pliable and you can stretch it tight for a good fit and I found if double wrapped at the start you do NOT need clamps. My last wrapped went the 10 plus years without unwrapping, Once dry it holds it new shape.
Wet it well and it will wrap really nicely.
The wrap allows me to touch the tubes almost as soon as I shut the car down. It prevents starter soaking and that blast of hot air you get when you pop the hood at car shows after a long drive.
I really like the stuff

Notice the cut in the flange. I do this between each set of tubes. I cut with a hacksaw nearly all the way through. This allows the flange to flex allowing the header gasket to seal better. I then use normal cheap gaskets and high temp silicon. My headers don’t leak.

I'm using MSD wires. They are about 3/4 inch from the headers and seem to be OK. Only a few thou miles so far. I'm sure they are many who have lots of miles with this combo, any comments????

I use 90* plugs with wire looms and my wires are fine.

as Norval say the header wrap works very well (I tried it for the first time on my project BB)..I'm pleased with the results. You can buy the wire insulating "socks" from ebay too. Advance Auto has started carrying them and they are much cheaper than most speed shops.

I'm using Jet Hot on the headers and DEI "socks" on the plug boots. No problems. I got the socks at my local speed shop.

DEI sells a couple different solutions for this problem. http://www.designengineering.com/pro...sp?m=sp&pid=54
Best of all, they're American Owned / American Made.

norval, i was gonna get the wrap when i ordered my hedmans but the tech said wrapping the em voids the warranty and promotes rust when they get wet.

As a side note, if all that heat is damaging your plug wires, watch what you are doing to the steering box. You can cook the oil inside if it gets too hot.

I do have Accel plug wires which I like, but they are still very close to the headers.

I have the same wrap, but was concerned with the possibility of trapping heat & moisture. Any thoughts on that?
Thanks,
Chris

Yep, that's the other reason why I wanted to wrap my headers, but concern about trapping heat & moisture caused me to reevaluate.
