I should add bring a quality camera. I took some beautiful pictures of my 61 parked out on the flats. The pure white ground, cloudless blue skies, and rock mountian back drops are the only place on the planet like it. I always like going out and doing some 120+ mph multiple 360's. on the way back into town
I'm from Salt Lake. The Salt Flats are about 100 miles to the west and about 10 miles from Wendover, NV. I've actually been to the races there twice. The World of Speed and Speed Week. Both times was excillerating. You're allowed in the pits with an ordinary ticket so you can get up close to the cars and the mechanics working on them. Seems the people are always very friendly and having fun. After checking out the cars, you head down to the five mile marker where the top speed is calculated for one pass. Here you can see a speck of dust and the faint whine of the car coming your way. By-the-way, you are 1/4 mile to the west of the track surface. Anyhow, the whine becomes louder and louder, all of a sudden the car blasts past. It is quite a thrill that everyone should take the chance to see. FYI, it is quite rare to see a car break the sound barrier or surpass 550 mph. But, there are a lot of cool cars and fun people. Be sure to take your sun screen also. On a normal day you're bound to get some serious sunburn. Have fun!!!! :D
I don't have their web site here at work. But any way the requirements are register before a cut off date & $300 You have to be there on the opening day which was Aug 11 this year for meetings and tech inspections. You have to have a close idea of which class your competing in from the rule book.
If your not capable of coming anywhere near a class record you will not be allowed to run generally. Because timed runs are only 6 days long and everybody wants the best air available. Which is a small window from maybe 7 am to 10ish cold dense air and no wind.
Another way to get a timed speed run is - If you see a highway Patrol along the freeway circle back around at aproach him with all your car has. I have a ticket from years ago for 152 in a 55 zone hung on my office wall
I never even saw that he was up on an over pass and I explained that i was just driving I still had over a 1000 rpm till red line.
