I replaced my clutch last year in my 71.
While everything was out I cleaned off all the motor oil,
gear oil, and grease. I replaced the rear main seal as well as the rear seal in the tranny and painted where necessary.
I've since noticed an irritating drip from the tranny and took a look at it tonight. It appears that gear oil is weeping from the shifter leavers.
Is this easy to fix?
What type of seals do the shift leavers have?
Do I need to remove the transmission & side cover to repair this?
Any help appreciated.
hey hammer, i just replaced those shift shaft seals a few months back with the trans still in the car. as stingr69 had stated, the (2) side cover seals were fairly easy but the reverse seal did take some time and coaxing. bought them from http://www.napaonline.com

That's what I was hoping to hear. So the side cover will come out without removing the tranny? (my reverse is not leaking).
I take it once the cover is off the seals are easy to install.
fred, if the other two seals are leaking why not change all 3 it may not be long untill the 3rd one starts leaking. if you do it right then you won't have to worry about it. just my .02 cents
The side cover seals are Chicago Rawhide # 7410. GM part # 3831716
Oddly their are TTO brand seals ( a Taiwanese seal), that fit much tighter on the shifter shaft. The CR seals which are the same seals from GM seem a little loose on the shaft. Especially since most side cover bores are pretty sloppy now. Even new CR seals tend to leak if the cover bores are sloppy. The TTO seal don't.

I've already ordered the CR seals. Wish I'd a waited now.
Guess I'll have to see how much slop there is once I get in there.
Thanks for the alternative though.
You know the TTO part number?
Well, just finished installing the new CR seals this afternoon.
Spent most of my time removing & replacing the old side cover gasket.
One of the old seals litterally fell out of the side cover and the other was very loose on the lever shaft. The fit of the new ones was quite snug so they should take care of the problem.
